Short answer

A mattress-moving quote should describe the whole bed set, not only say queen mattress or king bed. List the mattress size and construction, actual dimensions, bed base, ensemble sections, frame, headboard, drawers, slats, legs, fasteners and any adjustable or powered components. State whether the bed is assembled, who will dismantle and rebuild it, whether a mattress bag or other clean protection is required, and whether the manufacturer's instructions restrict bending, folding or transport position. Show the carrying route at both addresses, including stairs, lifts, narrow turns, low ceilings, parking and distance to the vehicle. Explain whether the mattress is being collected from a retailer, marketplace seller, storage unit or occupied home, and confirm the pickup window. Ask how the mattress will be kept clean, supported and restrained without being crushed by other goods. The written quote should separate packing, dismantling, transport, placement, reassembly, disposal and any waiting or access charges.

What affects a mattress-moving quote?

  • mattress and base size
  • actual thickness and rigidity
  • one-piece or split base
  • bed-frame dismantling
  • headboard size
  • drawers or storage compartments
  • powered adjustable components
  • clean protective materials
  • stairs, lifts and tight turns
  • carrying distance and parking
  • pickup waiting time
  • single-item versus household load
  • delivery placement and reassembly
  • old mattress removal if separately offered

What information should you give mattress movers?

  • mattress size and actual dimensions
  • manufacturer and model where known
  • construction type where documented
  • base, frame and headboard inventory
  • photos of the complete bed
  • photos of labels and existing marks
  • whether the bed is assembled
  • manual or assembly instructions
  • pickup and delivery access photos
  • stair, lift and doorway measurements
  • parking and carrying distance
  • seller or building pickup window
  • requested packing and mattress protection
  • placement, reassembly or disposal scope

Keep protection and transport instructions specific

Use the manufacturer's instructions for the exact mattress or powered base when they specify handling, folding, storage or transport limits. Do not assume every foam, spring or hybrid mattress can be treated the same way.

Ask how clean protection will be supplied and sealed, how the mattress will be supported, and what will prevent other items from pressing into it. The National Transport Commission's load-restraint guidance explains that loads must be restrained so they do not become dislodged or move excessively.

Measure the rigid parts as carefully as the mattress

  • measure the base and headboard separately
  • measure the narrowest doorway
  • check the turn beyond each doorway
  • record stair width, landing depth and ceiling height
  • confirm lift door and car dimensions
  • remove drawers and loose slats where appropriate
  • label frame pieces and fasteners
  • identify whether building bookings are required
  • confirm where the bed will be placed at delivery

Hypothetical example: marketplace king bed

Suppose a buyer purchases a king mattress, split ensemble base and oversized upholstered headboard. The seller can provide a two-hour collection window, but the buyer's apartment lift has limited depth.

The buyer sends actual dimensions and route photos before requesting quotes. A provider can then assess the lift, protection and crew requirements rather than arriving with a vehicle that suits the mattress but not the rigid headboard.

Mattress-moving mistakes to avoid

  • listing only the mattress size
  • forgetting the base or headboard
  • assuming every mattress can be folded
  • using a dirty or torn cover
  • not photographing existing marks
  • leaving drawers or bedding inside the base
  • losing frame fasteners
  • hiding stairs or lift limits
  • assuming reassembly is included
  • booking before confirming the seller window

Bed transport checklist

  • all bed components listed
  • actual dimensions recorded
  • condition photographed
  • manufacturer instructions checked
  • clean protection agreed
  • dismantling responsibility confirmed
  • frame parts labelled
  • both access routes measured
  • parking and pickup window confirmed
  • vehicle support and restraint discussed
  • delivery placement agreed
  • reassembly and disposal stated separately
